We've been friends with Lorenzo, editor of the fresh new web magazine RollingSteel, for years. His passion for jet engines led us to design our first Pilot together.
3000 Vickers
3000 Vickers (often referred to as HV). Vickers hardness is one of the three main scales used to measure the surface hardness of materials—the others are Brinell and Rockwell. The value is obtained by pressing a diamond indenter, a right-angled square pyramid with an angle of θ = 136°, and measuring the ratio between the applied load and the surface area of the indentation. The smaller the indentation, the greater the material's resistance to indentation, and therefore the harder the material.
The problem is that, often, great hardness also comes with a certain fragility. But fear not: in the case of our Phantom, we find a case made of AISI 316L steel (the wonderful X2CrNiMo17-12-2), coated with a Diamond Like Carbon surface treatment. The result? A hardened surface, without compromising the excellent mechanical properties of the steel.
Simply put: unbreakable.
